In den 1890er Jahren plante man ernsthaft eine Schwebebahn in Tansania zu bauen.

Im Gegensatz zur Wuppertaler Schwebebahn sollte die Bahn sowohl zur Personen- als auch Frachtbeförderung über längere Strecken dienen.

Es kam zu einem Bau einer Teststrecke in Deutz und einer Demonstrationsfahrt. Allerdings versagte bei der Vorführung die Elektrik der Bahn und führte neben dem Tod Langens wohl zur Einstellung des Projekts.
